Introducing Me


Hello,

My name is Jenny Calderón. I was born on June 26th, 1995, in Santiago de los Caballeros. Three years ago I was forced to move here in order to finish my Degree, which has been one of the most character-building experiences I’ve had. During this time, I’ve worked as interpreter, and English teacher. The latter is my current job; nevertheless, I’m still on a quest to discovering my ideal occupation.

In regards to my personal beliefs and hobbies, I have been a Christian for 10 years now, and attend church regularly. Music is also an essential part of my life as I’ve been singing and writing songs since I was fifteen. My favorite genres are alternative music (Latin), jazz, bossa nova, bolero, and merengue. I love reading novels, and Christian-fiction. My favorite book is actually a trilogy called Mark of the Lion by Francine Rivers. I love Italian food, sushi, and coffee. All types of dessert are welcomed too. I’ve travelled to Argentina and Canada for vacation, and wish to know many other countries (budget-willing).

I’m looking forward to learning new things in this course as we socialize the contents, and also share experiences.

The Bold and the Bashful         The content of this unit reminded me of a time I was considered shy and introverted. I also particularly remember being  misattributed  of having an  aloof  personality by many of my classmates in middle school and high school. However, later I understood this was simply because I did not share most interests or hobbies with them; therefore, while it might sound a bit  condescending , I just did not make any efforts to be on their good side, or seek for their friendship as I found it pointless. The Tipping Point

The Tipping Point According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a tipping point is " the critical point in a situation, process, or system beyond which a significant and often unstoppable effect or change takes place ". With this said, I think globalization has proven to be one of the most remarkable tipping points in worldwide history as it has had a tremendous effect in world economy, education, ideologies, health, and several other aspects of humanity.  For instance, it has made countries depend upon each other for sustaining their economy (e.g. tourism, petroleum, etc.) and also through free trade treaties. In addition, globalization has allowed for universities to reach international agreements. Unit 6: Spiritual Renewal

Spiritual renewal refers to practices or intends to get closer to the divine practices including fasting, praying, meditating, among others. This is not a new practice, it has been among us during centuries. All religions seek spiritual renewal, but their motivations are not always the same. For example, in fasting, we find that some religions do it to get spiritual discipline (episcopalianism), some others to get away from materialism (judaism), and others do it do to preserve their ancient traditions.It does not matter the reason why we seek to be renewed spiritually, what matters is that we all have the internal need to seek it. It seems like humans beings have the necessity to connect with something greater than the self.
