The Internet and Other Addictions

The Internet is a technology that has especially impacted young people and has provided many benefits. But some people become obsessed with the Internet, are unable to control its use and can jeopardize their work and relationships. This article addresses the problem of inappropriate use of these technologies. The use and abuse of the Internet are related to psychosocial variables, such as psychological vulnerability, stressors and family and social support.

Something that caught my attention was an article I read about this worldwide phenomenon that said, according to a report from the European Commission in 2001, young Westerners aged 15 to 24 regularly use computer science in almost half their free time. The mobile phone is the new technology most used, since it is used by 9 out of 10 young people. The use of email increases with age although, conversely, the use of video games decreases with age. "Chat" is the most common and even preferred form of communication for numerous teenagers and young people.
