About Unit 1: The Internet and Other Addictions

Airplane Mode 

Through the content of unit 1 titled The Internet and Other Addictions, I learned that addiction to the use of internet is not in of itself as harmful as other addictions which are usually characterized by causing not only a psychological dependency, but also a physical one. However, this type of addiction has nonetheless proven to inflict tremendous harm on many  social aspects of a person’s life. 

An example of how detrimental such addiction can be, is well depicted in the Netflix original Brazilian comedy film called, Airplane Mode. The story follows the life of Ana, a young social media influencer who works for the fashion industry as the face of a prestigious clothing brand. 

The plot thickens when after several minor driving incidents due to persistent cellphone use,  even while driving, she gets into a much more serious car crash that leaves her hospitalized with fortunately minor injuries. Ana’s parents, worried for her obsessive and reckless behavior, decide to confiscate her phone and exile her to her grandfather’s farm located in a remote area of Brazil. 

Ana reluctantly goes to her relative’s town where she is to be completely off the grid. On her stay there, she gradually builds a meaningful bond with her grandfather and other locals. Moreover, she also learns more about who she really is and what her true aspirations are, while also learning more about her late grandma, through her grandfather stories about her. These stories about the fascinating and bold life her grandmother lived, inspires her to design her own and unique clothing sketches.

Eventually she returns to the city and after a few mishaps along the way, the movie ends with a transformed protagonist who claims ownership over her life and career, no longer under the toxic influence of the fashion brand that had been using her, while also harming her by inflicting upon her the pressure to build a fake social media persona.

In conclusion, from this unit and film, I took away how important it is to identify when someone is an addict of any sort and, how imperative it is to offer them your help by turning them in if necessary, or referring them to a form of rehabilitation program.Ana’s journey in this movie proved as a reminder that despite how appealing the internet and social media fame may be, we must never lose ourselves to them nor alienate those we love because of them.

I also particularly remember being  misattributed  of having an  aloof  personality by many of my classmates in middle school and high school. The Tipping Point

The Tipping Point According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a tipping point is " the critical point in a situation, process, or system beyond which a significant and often unstoppable effect or change takes place ". Unit 6: Spiritual Renewal

Spiritual renewal refers to practices or intends to get closer to the divine practices including fasting, praying, meditating, among others. This is not a new practice, it has been among us during centuries. All religions seek spiritual renewal, but their motivations are not always the same. For example, in fasting, we find that some religions do it to get spiritual discipline (episcopalianism), some others to get away from materialism (judaism), and others do it do to preserve their ancient traditions.It does not matter the reason why we seek to be renewed spiritually, what matters is that we all have the internal need to seek it.
