Honesty... the best policy?

Honesty Is the Best Policy.

We have all heard and probably used the saying which gave the title to the second unit of our textbook, “Honesty is the best policy”. Now, I’d dare go out on a limb and say that most of us have never stopped to consider what underlies those simple words.
Some of us claim to be honest and firmly believe that every single person that inhabits the earth should at all times and at all costs be honest. And I agree with that mindset to a certain extent; however, in current days, some people hide their rudeness behind a curtain they call honesty.
Being honest sounds easier than it actually is. There’s a price that must be paid in exchange for being honest. In some cases, friendships are lost, relationships erode, and people stay away from us. To prevent ourselves from losing all the human connections we have, we should try to be more empathetic and understand that there are ways to be honest without hurting people’s feelings. Also we should be aware that there are some people who are very sensitive and can handle certain level of honesty.
To illustrate the consequences that being harshly honest might bring upon you, I’d like to share a short story titled “Like the Sun” by R. K. Narayan. This short story explores different themes, but the main one is honesty and its price.

  1. Hey Nefta~

I agree with you in that honesty and dishonesty are not as black and white concepts as most of us would like it to be; so, it is imperative that we learn how to assess these concepts from different perspectives. Thank you for sharing the short story! ;)
