Unit 6: Spiritual Renewal

In this unit we discussed about the practices that religious people carry out in order to strengthen their faith. Some of them are intricately related to refraining oneself from earthly pleasures like food and drink. Hence, fasting is one of the most common practices of this sort. In this hectic world we live in, fasting is said to be a way to replenish oneself, as one may get easily distracted by this fast-evolving society of overwork and constant entertainment. In addition, praying and singing are also a conventional way to get spiritually renewed. These can be done in community too, since it is greatly beneficial to relate to other people who are seeking the same goal. Another tradition which fosters discipline is pilgrimage, that consists of a journey to a sacred place. The effort invested in carrying out these practices over time bears fruit in strengthening one's will, and not only that but it also builds a character of humility, gratitude, and anti-materialism.
